We are thrilled to announce that Matthias Hornschuh, an award-winning German film and radio play composer, will be joining the Eurovisions International Conference 2025 as a keynote speaker. On May 13, he will deepen our discussion on "(Un)Fairness in Music", providing crucial insights into the challenges of fairness, authors’ rights, and remuneration in the creative industries.
Matthias Hornschuh: A Voice for Artists’ Rights
With a deep background in systematic musicology and composition, Matthias Hornschuh is an influential advocate for fairness and sustainability in the creative sector. He teaches at various European universities, exploring the intersections of culture, society, technology, law, and the market. Beyond academia, he actively works to protect the rights of authors and performing artists, striving for equitable conditions in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
Hornschuh is the chairman of the composers’ association mediamusic and serves on the board of GEMA, one of the most important collecting societies for music creators in Europe. As a spokesperson for the German authors' rights umbrella Initiative Urheberrecht, he has played a key role in discussions on AI, regulation, and fairness in creative work. Through his public speaking, advocacy, and writing, he warns that Europe is at risk of undermining the incentivization of creative work, a crucial issue for the future of music and the arts.
The Core of His Keynote: Fairness and the Music Ecosystem
Hornschuh’s keynote at the conference will examine the structural asymmetries in the music industry, particularly the challenges authors and performing artists face in securing fair remuneration and recognition for their work. His presentation will highlight key issues, such as:
🔹 The legal rights of artists versus market realities – Why many artists struggle to enforce their legal entitlements.
🔹 The undervaluation of creative work – How cultural, artistic, and knowledge-based labor is often not recognized as 'real work.'
🔹 The impact of big tech and regulation – Why a level playing field is essential for fairness in the digital age.
🔹 The role of policymakers – How political fears of falling behind in global competition are blocking necessary reforms.
Hornschuh’s insights will challenge us to rethink how we define fairness in music and explore how European cultural policies can better support authors and performing artists. With global political shifts creating new opportunities, his impulse will highlight how Europe can reclaim its cultural identity and ensure that creative work remains economically and socially sustainable.
Join us on May 13 at the University of Basel for this compelling keynote discussion.
