We are excited to welcome back Alessandro Capicchioni, Head of Delegation for San Marino at the Eurovision Song Contest, as a panelist at the Eurovisions International Conference 2025 in Basel. Alessandro already joined us for the 2020 edition of the conference, and we are thrilled to have him return to share his deep insights and unique experience once again.

As a long-time cultural professional and music educator, Alessandro Capicchioni has been shaping San Marino’s presence at Eurovision since 2008, not only at the main contest but also at Junior Eurovision and Eurovision Young Musicians. This year, he will participate in a panel discussion that dives into a particularly compelling topic: the challenges and opportunities of microstates participating in Eurovision.

Microstate, Global Stage

Eurovision prides itself on celebrating musical diversity and pan-European cooperation, but does it really offer a level playing field for all countries? For microstates like San Marino, competing on the same stage as media giants such as the UK, Sweden, or Italy comes with structural disadvantages—from financial constraints and limited domestic music industries to difficulties in securing televotes and visibility.

Alessandro will speak candidly about these issues, drawing on his years of experience navigating the intricacies of Eurovision as a small nation. What does fairness look like when your country is sometimes seen as an underdog or even as a curiosity? How can microstates use creativity, strategy, and international collaborations to overcome systemic challenges and still make a mark?

A Voice Worth Hearing

Beyond Eurovision, Alessandro has a rich background in choral music, theatre, and composition. A graduate of the Conservatorio G.B. Martini in Bologna, he has worked as a tenor, composer, pianist, and choral director. His artistic vision and diplomatic skill have helped San Marino punch well above its weight at the world’s biggest music competition.

Join the Conversation

Alessandro Capicchioni’s contribution to the conference will resonate with anyone interested in questions of (un)fairness in music, this year’s conference theme. His insights remind us that Eurovision is not only a song contest—it’s a mirror of Europe’s cultural dynamics, ambitions, and imbalances.

Don’t miss his panel and many more at the Eurovisions International Conference on 13–14 May in Basel.
